Seeing The Story: Workshop and Gallery visit with Órla Mc Govern

TULCA Festival of Visual Arts, in partnership with Galway Public Libraries, brings Make A Day Of It! Tuesdays to the education programme for a fifth consecutive year.  Designed with the commuting school in mind, it offers a full day cultural excursion, pairing a guided visit to an exhibition with a hands-on workshop.

Writer and storyteller Órla Mc Govern will lead a workshop (60 mins) in Galway City Library exploring visual narrative. Using the Story Spine structure combined with elements of response, improvisation and critique, children will compose stories based on artworks in the exhibition.

Schools will receive a guided tour (60 mins) of the exhibition in the Festival Gallery designed to complement the workshop experience.

About the Creative Facilitator

Órla Mc Govern

Órla Mc Govern is a storyteller, writer, improviser, actor and facilitator, based in the West of Ireland.  She is Artistic Director of The Spontaneous Theatre People and The Sky Babies, Galway and currently Co-Director of Improv Fest Ireland.  As a performer, she has worked extensively in extensively in scripted and improvised theatre around the world, as well as acting and improvising for film, tv and radio. Her most recent screen appearance was as Patricia Kelly in Len Collin’s multi-award winning ‘Sanctuary’.  As an actor, she lived, trained and worked extensively in the US for many years and was an original member of Improv groups: Seattle Goga, Seattle Neutrino Project, and Spolin Players Seattle. She also had the pleasure of performing with Edge Bainbridge, Jet City Improv, Unexpected Productions, and many others in the US.  In scripted theatre, she has worked at the likes of The Abbey Theatre, Red Kettle, Punchbag, Glasshouse and numerous others in Ireland. In the US theatres such as CHAC, NW Actors’ Studio, Baba Yaga, and Freehold Studio.  As a workshop facilitator, Órla has facilitated numerous workshops for Corporate, Artistic, and Individual clients around the world, and is skilled at tailoring each session to suit their needs. Órla’s plays have been produced around the world too, and she particularly enjoys working with site-specific and short duration theatre; having had work made on boats, in breweries and on top of giant sculptures. Órla continues to teach and perform globally, including with her troupe The Sky Babies and with Moth & Butterfly (an innovative Storytelling /Improv Project). She also has an alter ego who has her own career entirely! Her book ‘Dublin Folk Tales For Children’ was published in January 2018.
